Direct Messages in Separate Boxes

This just happened to me yesterday and it took all day to figure out what was going on. I’d also like to go back to how it was and would like the answer to this.

This update improves on the previous system by allowing participants to have focused side conversations without interrupting the main meeting flow. Previously, all chat messages were visible to everyone, which could cause distractions or clutter. With subgroup chats, teams can coordinate privately—like presenters managing the program—making meetings smoother and more efficient. This targeted communication is why Zoom introduced the feature.

Regarding going back to the previous chat functionality, we have provided your feedback to the product team. 

Update: There was a fix to this! I had to have Zoom connect with our IT director to make the option available to toggle off the direct messages in separate boxes. I couldn't tell you exactly what, but the person I emailed with was very patient and made this happen for me.
